Daddy’s School explores the philosophy of education and film of celebrated Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbf, who quit school due to poverty and a passion for revolution. All his children chose their father’s film school over Iran’s conservative ones to eventually became filmmakers too. To him, film is defined as life, imagination, inquiry, reality, contemplation and love. In fact, creative filmmaking is possible when one is self-taught through numerous attempts and mistakes made in life; when constant questions are raised about the world followed by contemplation and the act of breaking the invisible boundaries between reality and imagination. To share such a philosophy, a mutual agreement to go beyond the mere passing down of knowledge and living a free and creative life is required. Accordingly, their school refuses the restrictions of time and space. School can exist anywhere and anything can become teaching material. As the children’s father and colleague, Makhmalbf is a nomadic tutor with a blackboard at hand, anytime and anywhere. Makhmalbaf’s agitative, rule-breaking film is the result of this educational philosophy. (CHO Hyeyoung)
