Program Note
The National Gallery of London houses over 2,400 paintings. Behind this historical place where permanent exhibitions and various special ones are held every year, there are concerns and efforts of those who restore the paintings that survived the time, those who kindly explain them to the visitors, and those who manage all of heritages and experiences stored in the place. Frederick Wiseman, master documentarist capturing interrelation of human behaviors and minds in the spaces, closely examines various elements constructing the National Gallery as he did with institutions in his previous works. People who conserve, restore, educate and enjoy each make up a part of the National Gallery in their own ways, and experience the space of the gallery as well as the artworks. Wiseman’s camera films the reality of gallery administration and the mythological world of classic paintings full of meanings and symbolism. It takes the viewers beyond the physical space of the gallery and guides us to another level where substance and non-substance, trace and memory coexist. (Jin PARK)
