Program Note
Asian cinema expert, prominent film critic and programmer Tony Rayns is well known to us for his special ties with Korean cinema. Since he came to Korea for the first time in 1988, he has discovered and introduced talented Korean directors abroad and helped birth of Busan International Film Festival as a solid supporter of Korean cinema. However, what this film focuses on is the intimate and the personal rather than his achievements or status as a critic. By placing Rayns at the center of the narrative and closely weaving his special ties with Korean cinema around him, a kind of exposition of Korean cinema history can be gleaned from his private records. Audiences will be delighted to watch the interviews with acclaimed Korean directors such as Jang Sun-woo, Lee Chang-dong and Hong Sang-soo among others, and at the same time discover Rayns’ love for Korea, his charm and character, revealed in a visit to his favorite hotels, restaurants and bars.
