Program Note
<FILMISTAAN> is a black comedy about understanding each other little by little under serious threats of terror through the medium of cinema. Sunny, struggling to make a living in the Bollywood industry, joins an American documentary filmmaking team. His position is an assistant director but in reality he slogs through trivial tasks. In addition, the Rajasthan filming location is a dangerous region close to the border. Mistaken for an American, he is kidnapped by a Pakistani terrorist group. While detained in a small village near the Pakistani border, the funny and outgoing Sunny soon wins over the villagers’ hearts thanks to their bond of Bollywood movies. The villagers share their Bollywood fantasies and memories, and little by little Sunny and the villagers begin to understand one another. Eventually, Sunny attempts to escape with the help of villagers. Director Nitin Kakkar never soft-pedals the reality of Indian-Pakistani conflict, but nonetheless creates a black comedy and an ode to Cinema at the same time. <FILMISTAAN> declares cinema as a medium that purifies violence, terror, and regional animosities.
