Program Note
With all eyes on China during the Olympic Games, the status of Tibet briefly surged to the fore despite declining support ‘in the face of a gold rush into the ascendant Chinese economy.’ In her searing documentary chronicling monk Palden Gyatso’s thirty-three years in a Chinese prison, director Sasa reminds us that one million Tibetans have died since Chinese tanks rolled in in 1959. A radical conscience since the earliest days of the so-called occupation, Gyatso is tracked from his confinement, escape, and meeting with the Dalai Lama-always holding onto his faith and the ideals of resistance.
