Program Note
The Blood of Yingzhou District is a documentary about orphans in rural areas who were abandoned when their parents sold their blood due to poverty, contracted AIDS, and died. It would be easy to dismiss this film as a facile piece of social criticism except for the fact that it`s nearly impossible to find any traces of sentimental humanism within it. The image of the boy Gao Jun, who appears in the film, is hard to erase even after it ends. The boy is tossed from one relative to another after his parents die and almost loses his ability to speak. The village people avoid touching orphans like Gao Jun because they are afraid of infection. Except for the odd occasion when we see Gao Jun take his anger out on pigs, chicken, and other livestock, he adopts a stoic attitude towards life as he tenaciously holds onto it, even in face of poverty, ignorance, and prejudice. He is both heroic and touching. This youth manages to hold onto his dignity even though society has abandoned him. (Kim Young-jin)
