Program Note
Director Dagur Kári is known for his off beat sense of humor and low-key filmic tone. He′s stated in the past that he prefers making films that are a ′catalogue of ideas′ rather than traditional narratives, and he has carried out that philosophy in Dark Horse, the follow-up to his quirky debut, Noi the Albino. Daniel is an handsome and charming graffiti artist who earns a cash living painting Copenhagen′s walls. He meets Franc, a bakery employee, and after an unfortunate situation at work he helps her home. When they eventually move in together, he′s compelled to rethink his free flowing days of eluding the police, avoiding the bill collectors-he declares an income of seven euros to the taxman-and leaving unpaid parking tickets unpaid. His headlong charge into adulthood and real responsibility happens with Daniel surrounded by a cast of eccentric characters that are becoming a hallmark of Kári′s work. The character-driver film about Daniel′s personal journey can also be interpreted as a slice of twenty-something life reflective of a great deal of contemporary youth culture.
