Program Note
Recalling the fictional Romeo and Juliet and the real-life James Carville and Mary Matalin, come David Massey and Lea Jones. The polarized America of 2004 is the environment in which this political love story takes place. Director Mora Stephens combines actual footage captured during the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York to add a contemporary element to a love story that dates back to Shakespeare. Massey is a staunch Texas Republican, and Jones is an old crush from college-a Liberal, native New Yorker, she′s at the Convention specifically to protest the Bush administration. The chaos of the convention mirrors the turmoil for the would be lovers as their personal and political lives clash. Also caught up in the excitement is Dylan, a one time protestor who′s been selected to interpret Bush′s acceptance speech into sign language. The seeds for this story were sewn years ago, and as the US grows more divided Conventioneers is in the unique position of becoming a document of a turbulent point in modern American history as well as being a classic star-crossed love story.
