Program Note
Two draftees into mandatory military service in Jerusalem forge a cautious friendship as they patrol the streets. Smadar and Mirit are 18-year-old women with wildly differing perspectives on their service. Smadar, vivacious, flip, and independent, wants to be done with all the same crap as quickly as possible. Mirit, introverted, serious, and living at home, is proud to be called upon to serve. An unfortunate judgement by Mirit brings Smadar′s scorn down on her, but one day, the two are caught up in a terrorist attack and its aftermath. Smadar, feeling lonely and vulnerable, makes overtures of friendship to Mirit. Their companionship develops, albeit with some concealments and white lies, until Smadar′s reckless attitude lands Mirit in a military prison. The girls learn hard lessons about the power of miscommunication and zealous overcompensation in a state that emphasizes security. Among all the films made dealing with Israeli-Arab tensions, Close To Horne′s female perspective supplies a fresh angle for exploring Jerusalem′s political reality and its impact on a budding relationship.
