Program Note
Don Johnston is an unrepentant bachelor. He lives a static life and stays on his even keel regardless of situation. He gets dumped by his latest girlfriend and resigns himself to a solitary life once again. Out of the blue, he receives a letter from an old lover that tells him he has a son who may be looking for him. He sets out to discover who wrote the letter only to be confronted by his own past and his present, when he contacts each of the formidable women who could be the letter-writer. Jim Jarmusch has made a career out of creating characters that live outside the boundaries of society. None are disruptive or dangerous-just completely individual. Don is from that mould. As we follow Don′s quest, we meet the women he knew, and who were fascinated enough with him to allow him into their lives. As Don′s disconnectedness slowly evaporates, were left with the feeling that he′s making forward progress and may shift gears from neutral-one day. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2005.
