Program Note
The normal order of things is reversed in François Ozon′s latest, 5x2. Instead of beginning where most romances do, Ozon uses the device most recognizable from Harold Pinter′s Betrayal with divorce proceedings his jumping off point. Gilles and Marion′s life together is over, but the story is just beginning. The reverse chronology leads viewers on a hunt for the moment when it all started to go wrong. Told in five episodes-five key moments in their life-that would seem to offer clues to the ultimate failure we know happens, the film doesn′t provide any easy solutions or clearly identifiable events that would act as harbingers of doom. Gilles and Marion′s relationships is contrasted throughout with Marion′s parents and Gilles′ gay brother who are in equally conflicted relationships, making Ozon′s assault on contemporary, traditional heterosexual marriage more a dissection of human relationships of all sorts. Ozon states that he didn′t want to get bogged down by explanations and simple reasons for what kills love. There is always more to two people′s divergences. It′s just not that simple.
