The contradictory and seemingly hypocritical nature of human existence is explored in llia Khrzhanovsky′s controversial debut film. Two parallel tales unfold in two distinct spheres. Or perhaps not distinct at all. In a bar in Moscow, three strangers meet. The men are a presidential household assistant and a scientist working on a secret cloning experiment. The woman works in advertising. In their fictitious lives they do anyway. In reality, they′re anonymous businessmen, and the woman is a call girl. At the same time in an isolated village miles away, another prostitute, a friend to the woman in the bar, has died and her funeral is being prepared. Beginning with a powerful shot of four dogs on an abandoned street that is reminiscent of Béla Tarr, Khrzhanovsky manipulates sound and visual patterns to explore of idea of identity in contemporary Russia, while at the same time building an argument that the two distinct worlds of the story are not so separate; they could easily be co-existent mirror images of each other.
