Program Note
This is the life story of a legendary wrestler, Rikidozan. Kim Shin-rak immigrated to Japan at the age of 17 to become a sumo wrestler. But after finding out that only native-born Japanese could become Yokozuna, he determines to be a professional wrestler. He finally becomes the godfather of pro wrestling and makes pro wrestling become the most popular sport in Japan. The hero of Rikidozan: A Hero Extradinary is very unusual among the male heroes of Korean cinema. He was born in Korea but wanted to live as Japanese, and even studied in the U.S.A. to be Japanese. This film is based on the tension between the yearning for physical attraction and nationalist sentiment. When it was released, this innovative portrait of hero was not fully appreciated. However, Rikidozan: A Hero Extradinary should be discussed when it comes to the genre films in Korea.
