Program Note
2005 칸영화제 감독 주간 부문 The President′s Last Bang redramatizes assassination of the President Park Oct. 26th, 1979. Me Kim hears about a little dinner party at Gung-jeong dong for the president while he is in the hospital, and Kim goes there with Colonel Min. The party starts and Kim comes into conflict with the Secretary of Security. Kim calls Colonel Min and tells him to assassinate President Park. Im Sang-soo sticks to the realist attitude, most strongly prevalent among young directors who appear around the late 1990′s. The President′s Last Bang is a masterpiece which proves not only that he is a critical realist but also that he has got what it takes to be an artist creating his own style and tone. Although describing the most important incident in Korean modern history, he does not focus on the historical causality or the progressive political attitude, but tries to produce a cynical but fatalist tragicomedy picturing the characters′ existent situation. Elegant cinematography and the splendid performance of Baek Yun-shik are most enjoyable.
