Program Note
Made by Taiwan′s young director Cheng Sheng Lin, it was an officially selected PPP project at the 2001 Pusan International Film Festival. The Taiwanese countryside in the 1960s. Charming lady Bao Chai lives with her daughter Xi Lian. Xi Lian, who has just become an elementary school teacher, declares her intention to marry a relative, but the independent Bao Chai, whose husband is absent, strongly opposes it. Heartbroken Xi Lian finds consolation in a fellow schoolteacher, Ju chen and gradually becomes attracted to him. While secretly reading the letters sent by Ju chen, now posted to another district, Bao Chai is enchanted by a man′s love and the tug of war relationship between mother and daughter heads for unexpected catastrophe. This film is a landscape. Not just being a background, it′s a place where an individual and a certain environment discover and compose themselves. Bringing in Ju chen′s personal history of having come from China, and the existence of the husband imprisoned in jail for anti-government activities, Lin Cheng sheng places the family history of the mother and daughter over the landscape of the psychology and politics of Taiwanese society in the 1960s. Such a multi-leveled story is wrapped in a thoughtful presentation. The performance by Yang Gui Mei, who successfully portrays the inner life of Bao Chai, shines out softly like the moonlight that looks down on the film. (Kwon Yong-min)
