Program Note
Director Jan Cvitkovičs debut film, Bread and Milk, was a sparse, hard film about an alcoholic who gets out of rehab, just to fall back into the same tragic pattern. Shot in black and white and bearing a fatalistic tone, the film caused a stir at Venice and heralded a new voice in Slovene cinema. To follow up, Cvitkovič has made a film about basic human need. Much like Bread and Milk, where the central family simply made poor choices that prevented their happiness and unity, Gravehopping′s narrative revolves around a family as they cross paths in their search for warmth and love. In a small Karst town, Pero works as a funeral speech writer. Around him are his sisters, father, nephew and neighbours, which include the love of his life, Renata. The driving element among the people in town is fear: a fear that drives their desire for humanity, love, eternity and security. In the absurdity that is life, Pero composes something that transcends simply being a eulogy by incorporating his own experiences and philosophy.
