Leo Tolstoy′s Faux Billet is the basis for this tale of circumstance, destiny and consequence, and how our lives unknowingly intermingle and impact each other-sometimes with tragic results. Beginning with a counterfeit 500-euro note, the carrying forward of misfortune or wrong connects four groups of people in four episodes in a cruel chain of events. Tuomas, a hacker, Niko, his friend and a hedonist; Elina, a privileged activist; Isto, a non-descript worker; and Hannele, a cop, and her husband are joined together in a story of spiralling evil and one about the difficulty of forgiveness. Director Aku Louhimies has drawn from classic literature in the past-his Restless was inspired by Albert Camus′s L′Etranger. The movie is a rarely seen glimpse of modem Helsinki, and was critical and box office success in its native Finland when it was released there.
