Program Note
With unconventional visual elements and a unique sense of dramatic composition, The Forest of Gods tells the story of the Professor, an artist, who survives two suffocating regimes: the Nazis and the Soviets. We first meet the Professor when he is in a German concentration camp. He survives his days by inserting himself into a morbid drama of his own imagining. His sense of irony and black humor creates a distance from reality that helps him survive from day to day. When he′s finally released from the camp, he finds himself living in a new world order. As a Soviet citizen, he writes a sarcastic and biting memoir, a work that earns him the wrath of the Soviet authority. With each of the rulers of his most recent past preaching a kind of freedom, the Professor can only face up to the challenge of stepping into one grotesque freedom from another. The Professor is in possession of his own personal Decalogue that helps him come to his realizations and remain unbreakable under the most trying of circumstances.
