Program Note
The opening film is HOU Hsiao Hsien’s final version of Three Times, which has been re-edited since its screening at the Cannes this year. Three Times introduces three exquisite tales of love weaved in consummate harmony that uses epochal moments in Taiwanese history as touchstone. HOU’s newest masterpiece follows a couple in love, as enacted by the same performers (SHU Qi, CHANG Chen), the two undertake different identities through poignant fragment of time named as “A Time for Love”, “A Time for Freedom” and “A Time for Youth”. This is the first time its final version of 135 min. RT will be screened.

Hou Hsiao-Hsien
A leading figure of the Taiwan New Wave in the last decade. He made critically acclaimed films including The Time to Live and the Time to Die (1985) and Dust in the Wind (1986). In 1989, his City of Sadness won the Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival. Other films include The Puppetmaster (1993), Flowers of Shanghai (1998).
