Program Note
Buddhadeb Dasgupta makes the most contemporary films in the film industry in India. His new film, Memories in the Miat is about the loneliness of today′s Hindus in the city. After his wife left him with his son, thinking that he fell for another woman, Ashwini becomes a cold-hearted man. His son Sumonto is husband and a father to two kids. but his life is no better than his father′s. The film criticizes the meaning of a modern family. It talks about the loneliness of the fathers who feel isolated after making a family. This is actually a common illness of modern people. The father and son yearn to talk with each other, but they meet too late. Modern men are spiritually crippled and they don′t know about themselves and cannot communicate with each other. Maybe their worst choice was building a family. The director added illusionary scenes of the father′s past in the son′s present. The son repeatedly runs into a pocket picker and flute player. The illusionary scenes symbolize the crisis and isolation of the father. The wind comes and goes every so often making a hole in modern men. Memories in the Mistis the painful groans that come from the holes made in their hearts. (Kang So-won)
