Program Note
In the Paris of 1968 students are out on the streets, and revolution is in the air. Teenage siblings Theo and Isabelle befriend Matthew, an American student living in Paris. All three of them are fanatical cinephiles, and they spend their days and nights passionately watching movies at the city′s celebrated cinematheque. With their parents away, Isabelle and her brother invite Matthew to move in with them, and the three youngsters soon find themselves unable to leave the apartment-at first playing movie trivia games, but soon participating in a complex psychological and sexual dynamic. Meanwhile, on the city streets, the student demonstration sreach boiling point. Based on the novel The Holy Innocents by Gilbert Adair and using Adair′s script, Bertolucci revisits the vibrant politics of the European sixties which fired so much of his early work as a director from The Spider′s Stratagem(1969) to Last Tango In Paris(1972).
