Program Note
In December 1972, Anyang Production imported Five Fingers of Death under the title An Iron Man in the form of joint production. However, it is an irony that the Korean audiences did not know that An Iron Man was the same film which made a big box office hit in the United States under the title Five Fingers of Death in March of 1973. The history of joint film production between Korea and Hong Kong go back to 1957, and Chung directed his first joint film, Longing for Home, in 1958. However, after the mid-60s, joint film sin-name-only began to be imported, and most of them were reedited without the consent of the director. An Iron Man was one of these. Although it is the same story as Five Fingers of Death, there are slight differences besides language differences. It will be interesting to compare the two films and digest the meaning of joint productions which is an important part of the Korean cinema history. (Cho Young-jung)
