Program Note
This is Chung Chang-wha′s first film produced after he moved to Golden Harvest. After having produced sword fighting actions at the Shaw Brothers, he returned to his original trademark of modern action. This movie is about a poor diver, Hwang Joon, who does not even have money to get married, who one day is hired by a man to bring out a box under the sea. Another group of gangsters are waiting to get the box which is filled with gold, and through the chaos, Hwang Joon escapes with the box. Several years later, Hwang Joon is now living a new life with the gold he took, but Hwang Joon and his family is persistently tracked down by the gangsters who are after him for the gold. Among the films made by Chung Chang-wha, The Devil′s Treasure has the most variety of action. It is a full action package, from bare fist fighting to gun shooting and from motor boat action to car chasing. (Cho Young-jung)
