Program Note
Soo-nam snlists to fight in the Pacific War as a Japanese amt officer and does not understand his colleagues who insist on being Korea and fight against the Japanese. During a battle in Burma, he meets a Burmese woman guerilla soldier and slowly comes to understand the meaning of independence. The story is about a young man slowly finding his ethnic identity as it unfolds through the heated love much like the tropical background. Chung Chang-wha, known for his "mainland action" films based in Manju during the Japanese colonization which were popular in the early 60s, moves his central stage from the Manju plains void of ant historical reference to South East Asia which was where the Pacific War made its mark. Hence, rather than the normal thrilling action provided by the Manju based action films, the film follows the psychological changes that force the hero to undergo. During the making of the film, the scenes were mostly shot on sets recreated from the promotional brochures that ome countries in South East Asia had published. Although the sets look almost like the real tropical region, the image created of th Burmese woman, who seems to have just jumped out of a catalogue, seem unreal. (Cho Young-jung)
