Program Note
Shin Sung-il, a star actor of youth films, and Twist Kim appear in this youth action film. Duk-tae works at the pub and he revenges on the man who abandoned his older sister by approaching and luring the man′s younger sister, Young-ah. Most of the youth films popular in the mid-60s were about a love that flourished between a penniless rake and a rich man′s daughter and this was a reflection on the confused values of the young people in the forefront of the government-driven economic development. In this film, Chung takes away the innocence of the hero who in other youth films is usually depicted as a "good-hearted back street guy". The only penitence the hero, Duk-tae, shows to his actions after he rapes and makes Young-ah pregnant, is accepting the woman′s love. He is portrayed as a victim wounded by his stronger opponent′s economic power but at the same time an offender who should be condemned. The modern figure Duk-tae does not live by the traditional moral values and as he lives in the dark alleys of the city, he rebels against the world with his fists. (Cho Young-jung)
