Program Note
In the reign of King Suk Jong, a lone swords man appears at a village tyrannized by the faction of Jang Hee-jae, who is the brother of Jang Hee-bin. The swords man′s secret is slowly revealed through the flash back narrative structure as he uses his sharp sword against his opponents while hiding his wrath behind the bamboo hat and mourner′s garb. By mixing several genres, Chung tried to search for an aesthetical Korean style action. This film links traditional epic story with the western gunman legend. The highlight of this movie is the mise-en-scene. Rather than his trademark fast editing, Chung managed to include in his long shots the flowing movements of the characters′ long sleeves and long garments (character istic of the traditional attire) as they fight with their swords. Through this film noir, Chung shows some splendid movements of the characters as they fight with their sharp swords and uses the screen composition to create a dynamic aesthetic. (Cho Young-jung)
