Program Note
Hideo Nakata, famous for Ring and Dark Water, has directed another film, but this time it is not a scary story. Hideo Nakata pays a great deal of respect to Japanese film productions and the people working there. Ken Miyama, the protagonist, was a famous movie star in the 1960′s, but film studio retired after his wife′s death and an alcohol problem. After 35 years, he returns to a and there he confronts the memory of his now-gone wife and meets a young staffer, Mio, who feels enervated by the burdens of all-consuming work. As such, this film moderately displays how the last scene of an old actor is created in his last film. Nakata′s affection for film studios and staff has been overlooked because of his talent for making horror movies. However, as his first film, Don′t Look Up and a documentary film about his senior directors at Nikkatsu demonstrate, he has deepened the depth of his own theme time after time. Such endurance and frankness are well placed in Last Scene and viewers will also see how his theme evolves in this film. Therefore, this film can be seen as a story of an old man facing his last moment as an actor, and at the same time a dedication to Japanese films and staff working for them. Last Scene has irresistible attraction and aftertaste worth trying. (Kwon Yong-min)
