Program Note
The characters in Fu Bo witness the borderline between life and death everyday. The life of Uncle Fu, a coroner estranged from his wife and son, is more closely related to the dead than the living. Tragically enough, Uncle Fu encounters his son only when he examines him as a corpse. The film also features a Portuguese chef who cooks for killers and death-row prisoners. The first-time co-directors observe the lives of diverse characters from a unique perspective on death, suggesting that life and death are inseparable. The most impressive scene Is where Uncle Fu and his colleagues have a birthday party for a dead child in the autopsy room. Practically living with the dead people, they consider the corpses as their family. The film leads us to reflect upon the value of human beings and death through the unusual landscape of an autopsy room. (Kim Young-jin)
