Program Note
This is the newest film by William Kwok, whose In The Dumps was presented in ′Wide Angle′ in the 3rd PIFF. The film features a virgin killed by a rapist, dead virgins on trade for spiritual weddings with dead bachelors, the two friends Sissy and Chun Sheng, and Qing Hua, a woman in love with both of the men. The three share a secretive relationship. The director deals with the issues of love In the form of mystery related to an old Chinese tradition. Struggling with oppressive tradition and commodified love, Qing Hua strives to hold on to her love In vain. In this film, no one can possess his or her lover: all the characters are on trade and fail to keep his or her love. Shot with a digital camera and transferred to 35mm, the film fascinates us with the defamiliarizing low-key lighting, which builds a sharp contrast of red and black. The music is also enchanting. A long-awaited masterpiece of Hong Kong independent cinema. (Michelle Sohn)
