Program Note
From a history wracked by war comes three journeys of common people. August Sun is a film that captures war′s deadly impact on the individual. Several voyages travel on three axes: A family that abandoned their home in fear of pursuing rebels; a brother looking for his younger sister-turned prostitute; and a woman following a news journalist, in search of her husband who left to fight in the war. The film quietly elaborates in what life is like in present day Sri Lanka. A refugee boy is forced to part with his beloved puppy, the brother in search of his sister is beaten and held prisoner, and instead of finding her husband, the woman confesses her love to the journalist accompanying her. Their journeys turn out to be unsuccessful, but Facing the road that lies ahead, they feel empty and lonely, waiting in line for nothing more than to belong to a family and to secure a place in society. This has been the image of Sri Lanka for the past 20 years; a country ripped apart and desolated from the inside. Sri Lanka′s unrelated yet intertwined tales. (Kang So-won)
