Program Note
Living in the ravaged city of Sarajevo, means that Fikret Varupa is not an ordinary 16 year old boy. Director Srdjan Vuletić has said of his feature debut that it is about "the generation of sons whom their fathers left no legacy other than destroyed cities, abandoned principles and a society in chaos". Accordingly, at the traditional Muslim funeral service, Fikret learns that his dead father owes money to Hamid, a man he does not even know. Hamid will not permit the considerable debt to go to the grave with the body, so the debt automatically passes from the father to the son. Fikret must "redeem his father′s soul" by clearing the debt. In order to secure spiritual and financial forgiveness Fikret wanders into the real world of Sarajevo, which is ruled by post-war chaos, misery and poverty. His naivete and his desperate circumstances make him an ideal target for two corrupt policemen who wish to "help" him(and themselves) by recruiting him for a scheme involving a kidnapped girl.
