Program Note
Stagnant economic conditions in Eastern Europe have sparked a thriving business in the unlawful trafficking of human beings. In Krsko, near the Slovenian border with Croatia, former motorcycle-racing champion Ludvik has become part of this criminal network. Every night he smuggles illegal immigrants in his van to the Italian border. While his unfortunate clients dream of a better future in the West, cynical Ludvik refers to them as "spare parts" because many of them are prepared to sacrifice a kidney or other organ to pay for their journey. One day, Ludvik acquires an assistant, the young and inexperienced Rudi. Ludvik tests Rudi′s reliability by urging him to take advantage of a beautiful Macedonian passenger to gain sexual favors. Although Rudi experiences momentary moral qualms, he soon becomes tougher and more ruthless than Ludvik. While similarly-themed films such as Distant Lights(also in this year′s program) concentrate on the immigrants′ perspective, Spare Parts shifts the focus from the exploited to the exploiters, exploring the emotional toll their work exacts and the desperation that drives them to it.
