Program Note
The world is hell resembling a jungle. This jungle is so fierce one can never let one′s guard down. If one overcomes one evil human being, there are more to overcome. Sonny, the protagonist, is falsely accused of murder and is sentenced to prison where he then has to negotiate the harsh world of prison life where violence is the norm. Deathrow is a powerful oratorical film with great narration, depicting societal evils and disease that result from governmental misdeeds. In order to resist corrupted national policies, the genesis of evil, individuals resort to small-scale evils in order to survive, and, in the process, transmit the evils to the rest of society. All inmates live day-by-day nervously as if standing on a knife′s edge trying to survive. Director Joel Lamangan elevates this film to a dramatic level in order to criticize society, taking the lives of the deathrow inmates to the extreme, depicting the vicious cycle of evil giving birth to another evil.
