Program Note
The Day | Became a Woman is a ′compressed file′ containing the social reality that women in Iran face. This feature is comprised of three segments, beginning with the perspective of a nine-year-old about to begin life as a woman in Iran and ending with her realization of freedom later in life, delivering a sharp critique of this restrictive life. Its metaphorical implications criticize the patriarchal and restraining nature of Islamic society, using symbolism to make its message absolutely clear. Meshkini uses episodic allegories like those found in experimental cinema rather than conventional drama to delve deeply into the problems facing women in Islamic society. In particular, filmic styles incorporated in each segments in this feature are based upon the contents of the episode. The first episode has a plot structure that maximizes the irony, whereas in second episode, the film focuses on structured editing technique, contrasting the women′s escape from the society and men′s hampering of her attempts. The last episode utilizes allegory-like storytelling process to severely criticize the reality women are subjected to. While using these various styles, Meshkini succeeds in implying the subject matter in an effective fashion. (Kim Ji-Seok)
