Defining what is and is not normal in a society is not an easy task. This film introduces people who seem normal and others who do not, presenting social critique as allegory. Keepers of the local railroad tracks, Balaram and Nimai are everyday people who wrestle whenever they have the time. In the village where they live, a Christian priest engages in public service by caring for the elderly and disabled. In the neighboring village lives a dwarf. While the world of the seemingly normal people is permeated by jealousy, hatred and violence, the world of the dwarf, who is considered as abnormal, is an ideal place full of peace. Perhaps the most serious problems Dasgupta see are the indifference and lack of compassion in contemporary society. To him, the world may be in a disparaging state, yet in the film, he provides glimpses of hope as mask dancers passing through the village saving a little boy in a life-threatening situation, the Christian priest who leaves a message of forgiveness and reconciliation amidst his death, and Uttara, the owner of a pure heart.
