Program Note
Shanao who appeared out of nowhere during 10th century Japan, and whose tragic death at a young age has left numerous battle stories, is a true historical figure. Especially the stories of Shanao and Benkei whose fateful meeting at the Gojoe bridge in Kyoto sets off the most popular Japanese tales passed down through Kabuki performances and folktales. The storyline is based on the relationship of the heroic duo: the handsome and clever warrior with extraordinary talents in martial arts, Shanao and the wild Benkei whose change of heart brings the two together. A leading force in Japanese New Wave whose unique style has generated a cult following, Sogo Ishii transforms these Japanese heroes into cyberpunkish historical figures with a totally different interpretation. Sogo Ishii creates a sinister city that resembles the occult while combining action reminiscent of Chinese opera with fantastic computer graphics. Gojoe takes a step further from the conventions of Japanese period pieces established by masters such as Akira Kurosawa and Kenji Mizoguchi, and brings it closer to true entertainment. The charismatic stars of the film, Tadanobu Asano and Masatoshi Nagase, and Daisuke Ryu give a superb performance. (Shion Yang)
