Program Note
Fleeing by Night is a sad tale of two men and a woman living through an era of uncertainty. Set in China during the 1930s, theater owner′s daughter, Ing′er, her cellist fiance, Shao Dugn who just returned from U.S., and star of the Opera, Lin Chung, meet. Shao Dung who had left for the U.S. to learn financing only to come back as a cellist, experiences no difficulty in getting to know Ing′er whom he never met but knew through the long period of exchanging letters. However he quickly becomes enamoured by Lin Chung after attending the theater star′s performance. As love and friendship entangle, ′Fleeing by Night′ on stage ends up with Shao Dung and Lin Chung eloping during the night. This scandalous affair harshly racks the two men′s lives, but strangely enough it is Ing′er who truly understands and accepts them. The film maintains its balance by refusing to place weight on any single character. The epic storyline may be a bit conventional yet, the forceful directing style and subtle sensibilities carry the film to another level. (Kang So-Won)
