Program Note
′Han-wool-sam′ is an organization of parents whose children were killed in the course of sociopolitical movements. Among their lost children are a son who fought for labor rights and was mysteriously killed, and a daughter who self-immolated to protest government dictatorship. These mysterious deaths date back to the 1970s. The grief of the parents who lost their children remains strong decades later. As they fight to reclaim their children′s honor, they have become warriors as their children once were. In the winter of 1998, these parents organized a sit-in at the National Assembly, calling for the restoration of the honor of human rights victims as well as a revelation of the truth behind their deaths. Mindullae is centered on this lengthy sit-in which lasted for more than 60 days, and portrays the awakening of the parents and their passion for social justice in the course of struggle. As the sit-in drags on, their life becomes a daily routine. They become strong enough to smile about their actions. However, conflicts among them surface. They become heartbroken as they witness how the living take priority over the dead. The camera′s gaze, participating in the parents′ grief and passion, testifies to the social inequality made apparent through their grief, and that their lives, like dandelions surviving in the field, are strong and committed to their cause.
