Program Note
In 1968, the Red Leaf Junior Baseball Team of Taiwan beat a Japanese team by 7 to 0 in an international tournament. The victory restored the self-respect of Taiwanese people depressed by the diplomatic uncertainty of the times. This documentary film is based on the director′s quest for the truth behind the legend that the players were trained using a stick for a bat and a stone for a ball. Hsiao Chu-Chen seeks to learn what the legendary players have become, 30 years after that memorable year of 1968. Traveling for 2 years tracking down the old members, she discovers that the legend is more of a tragedy for them. More than half of the members passed away before reaching the age of 40. Many of the survivors are now alcoholics, confessing in pain that the glorious victory actually made their lives worse. Some of them blame the government for not honoring them with any reward. The director says that memory is strange, considering how one glorious moment can be a legend in so many people′s hearts but at the same time be a personal tragedy for the participants. In spite of it all, she discovers a ray of hope in the younger generation struggling to improve their futures. (Kang So-Won)
