Program Note
There are people who live just to exist. To them, questioning their existence is a luxury since they are completely locked out of society. That′s why they are in discord with it. These include sick people on the road, homeless sleeping in open view and juvenile delinquents selling chewing gum, to name a few. They instinctively acknowledge certain methods to adapt themselves to societal changes rather than struggling against it, because that′s the only way for them to exist; rather, it′s the only way for them to survive. Director Park Ki-Bok again invites them onto the screen, as he did with We Are Not Warriors and turns their lives into a game. This is a game of performance vs. actuality, drama vs. reality.. and they gladly embrace the film like long-waited rain falling on their chaotic daily life. That′s probably due to a certain self-pride resulting from having rare starring roles in this cinematic portrayal of their lives, as they have never been under such spotlight. Leave Us Alone, with its subject-friendly camerawork and narrative structure, features mutually- understanding interviews, as it demonstrates for us the hybridity constituting the senses at the boundary of film and reality. This can be seen as a new trend in Korean documentary cinema. (Kim Sun-A)
