An Alumni Association is a nickname given by the police to fifteen members of a labor and civic. organization arrested in Pusan, one of them being a civil-elected ward chief. They are arrested under the pretense of being spies working under orders from the North to overthrow the South Korean government. Carefully compiling interviews with people involved in the ′Young-Nam Association′ incident, with court records, media coverage, and activities of the families involved, An Alumni Association shows the sorrow and courage of the victims′ families, as well as the wrongful political arrest and illegal wiretapping that are shielded by the National Security Law. Three-year long wiretapping by the secret police with suspicions on creating top-secret computer disks makes us to realize that we are living in a society where political powers still restrain the individual′s freedom of expression and behavior. The documentary′s composition is that of collecting images and titles, then scattering them as to perfunctorily dismantle the biased trial, while incorporating songs of struggle (in a hard rock version) as a metaphor. The editing collects the images of Kim Dae-Jung′s personal history and the oppressive nature of Young-Nam Association′s victims, as it ridicules political abuse and governmental restraints. On the other hand, the camera captures the activities of the accused, their family and colleagues, revealing the paradoxical nature of justice whereby the accused are more imposing than the prosecutors. By overthrowing intermediate appeals, An Alumni Association concludes by stating that the suspected ones are indeed the people of righteousness and conviction. (Nam In-Young)
