Program Note
Ringo and Inako, a young couple apparently on the run, beg a room for the night from an old college friend of Ringo′s. During the night they make love twice (Inako seems inured to Ringo′s violence towards her) and act out two flashbacks to episodes from their pasts -- but with the sexual roles exchanged, so that Ringo plays the girls and Inako plays Ringo. Ringo succumbs to food poisoning during the night and dreams of himself as a movie gangster; when he wakes, he addresses the camera with a monologue describing the appalling events which brought them there.. Nagasaki made this film after a long period in hospital (he nearly died in a motorcycle crash while filming on the road) and its daring theme and form both reflect a new desire to take film to its ′outlaw′ limits. Both lead actors are now rather famous (both were seen in PIFF films last year: Muroi in Nodo-Jiman, Naito in After Life) and their youthful performances here are vivid and fearless. Thanks to them, Nagasaki is able to make this a love story: brutal, shocking, even horrifying, but a love story nonetheless. (Tony Rayns)
