Program Note
2H starts on a subway train that runs into an accident. The film then follows an image of the lean hand of an old man over ninety. Director, Li Ying tries to talk to us through the image of the old man who can meet death anytime. Ma Jin San, a 95-year-old former Kuomintang general, defected to Japan and has been living alone in a Tokyo apartment for fifty years. An avant-garde artist, Xiong Wen Yun, also living in Tokyo, desperately wants to have a baby while maintaining her own career. The lives of these two interplay and present a subtle contrast to each other. Xiong Wen Yun takes care of Ma Jin San and worries the old man might die alone without her help. However Ma′s obstinate pride causes continuous friction between the two. Their conflicts are largely differences between generations. Simultaneously, their discord mirrors Chinese contemporary history with the break up of contemporary society through family dissolution and isolation. Ma dies alone as Xiong feared, in February, 1998. Whether or not LI intended it, 2H becomes the filmed record of Mais death. Now the life of Xiong Wen Yun is left behind, however Li passes the answer to the hew millennium. (Kim Ji-Seok)
