Program Note
Kim Dong-Won has long supported the community movement for the needy, not only as a member of the community but also as a documentary filmmaker. He first visited the slums of Haengdang-Dong in 1994. The number of residents losing their homes to re-development sites have increased as more houses were built there, all thanks to a flawed housing plan by profit- hungry builders and government policy which lacks any compensation for the former residents. Those residents at the re-development site have united to stand against such conflict, because they have no other place to go. Haengdang-Dong People features their courageous battles with paid hoodlums to protect their family ground. Their fight results in the right to live in an apartment, but it doesn′t end there. The sequel follows triumphant villagers three years later, finding them at a construction site of an apartment complex setting up a temporary residence. Instead of going their separate ways upon the end of the struggle, they establish a cooperative and a credit union, creating a regional partnership among themselves. Black and white photography handled in a fretwork-like pattern recalls their painful, angry looks from the previous Haengdang-Dong People. They express both pride and humility with their gray-hairs and friendly gestures. Their original notion of ′getting out of poverty at any cost′ has changed to a conviction that poverty isn′t the only fight, that it′s possible to live a beautiful life while being poor. This is a philosophical essay on slum people planning for a successful community life amongst their neighbors. (Nam In-Young)
