Program Note
Abbas Kiarostami made Where is the Friend's Home?about 12 years ago and film title's referred to a poem by the lranian contemporary poet, the late Sepehri, a perfect translation of the poem into film language. The film was firstly shown at the 5th Tehran's Fajr Film Festival and did not catch that much attention from the critics, however, it received two awards from the festival. Nantes film festival showed the film in its out of competition but it was David Streiff, the scholar director of Locarno Film Festival who discovered the film and screened it in his competition where the film received several awards and brought an international recognition for Kiarostami in 1989. Where is the Friend's Home?is a pure piece of art,an odyssey of the today man in search of life and love, in search of what he's lost during centuries domination of machinism. A film which makes the audience to see but not just to look;a film not only for children but for adults, to learn how to live and how to love. Kiarostami has narrated a simple story in a small village in north of lran whose universality brings all nations, classes and races under the single umbrella of humanity.
