Program Note
Thai cinema at the brink of the 21st century is going through dramatic changes. With only one 1997 film Dang Bireley and Young Gangsters to his profile, newcomer Nonzee Nimibutr′s second film Nang Nak has by far surpassed any other Thai film at the local box office. This in turn suggests the rise of a new generation in Thai cinema. Based on the horrific yet sad story of the legendary ghost. Nak, this famous tale has seen numerous adaptations on theater and TV. Perhaps the most popular story would be for Nak to take revenge on her husband and his new wife. This film however, focuses on the everlasting love shared between Nak and her husband Mak Set in Prakanong province of Thailand, Nak′s husband Mak leaves for war, with pregnant Nak left to tend to herself. Nak and the baby die during childbirth and Mak is seriously injured in battle. As soon as he recovers from his war wounds, Mak hurries home to Nak and the baby, both ghosts in reality, who warmly embrace his return. Unaware of his family′s true identity, Mak happily goes about his s until a neighbor discloses the secret of his wife and baby. Mak runs off to a temple, but eventually Nak′s soul is set to peace by a high priest. Mak becomes a priest and prays for his wife′s happiness in the other world. Nonzee Nimibutr employs painstaking cinematography and special effects to separate his film from the others that share the same storyline. The result: a superb ways highlight of Nak′s love for Mak.
