Program Note
As a documentary director and a citizen who used power created at the nuclear plant, Kana Tomoko feels it her responsibility to report the leak situation in tsunami-battered Fukushima. After returning to Tokyo she finds out that she is pregnant. She is overjoyed yet terrified by what the effects of her exposure to radiation may have on the baby. She realizes that her body is the site that may expose the Fukushima disaster, and that she and her baby’s story is the story of Fukushima. Hence her camera now points inward. The reflexive documentary makes a detailed record, proving that “the personal is political.” The film’s biggest strength lies in her honest voice, as it narrates the terror, anger and conflict she feels and the hope that blooms as she watches citizens participating in protest against nuclear plants. But this hope also becomes synonymous with a long and difficult fight against a government that will not give up nuclear power even in the face of catastrophe, and the 40 years that it will take to ameliorate the effects of radiation.
