Program Note
The struggle for existence, to earn a living, to subsist, to survive... The film unfolds in the realm of work: in strawberry fields, in factories, in offices, in cars, on the street. The protagonists are Ewa, an illegal immigrant from Poland who comes to Austria hoping to build a better life for herself and her daughter, and Marold, an emotionally isolated Viennese real estate agent with dangerous sexual tastes. Although not a documentary, it gives a detailed, precise and authentic description of the nature of work, capturing the nature and rhythm of manual labor, without losing respectful detachment from the persons being filmed. Director Madernotes, "What makes my film fundamentally different from others is that I′m not interested in bourgeois drama, I don′t want to show banal anxieties; my interest lies in the social conditions I want to make a statement about."
