Program Note
It′s 1998 as the filmmaker drives through the streets of Seoul in a taxi. His adventures feature seven motor-mouthed drivers who relate stories that are interesting yet bitter. Mr. Lee lectures on improving male potency and lovemaking techniques, while Mr. Park talks about making a fortune by smuggling US military goods. Mr. Hong wishes to convert every passenger to Christianity, and Mr. Kwon reminisces about the ‘good old days’ of the military regime while preaching about being thrifty. There′s Mr. Choi, married for 14 years but with multiple sex partners, and Mr. Shin who began driving a taxi upon his retirement. It′s impossible to laugh or get angry over their remarks, as they represent a self-portrait of ourselves rushing into modernity. Overlapping with the cityscape of Seoul, these seven stories help us re-examine the issues of sex and morality, political ideologies and economic developmental policies. Lucky Seoul is an essay written in a cab, reflecting the Koreans′ way of thinking. (Nam In-Young)
