Program Note
It′s 1999 and several Burmese nationals assemble in front of the Myanmar Embassy in Seoul, crying for democracy in their country. For Koreans who are used to mass demonstration, this gathering may be meager, but to the ones involved, it is a life and death situation. They′re in danger of being classified as illegal aliens and being deported back to their country, where they face arrest and possible death sentences. These members, from the Seoul branch of Myanmar′s freedom fighters NLD, convert their precipitous life here to the passion toward democracy. Some are married to Koreans and have set up a family, knowing they could be separated at once, while others are student activists here to learn about the struggles of the Korean democracy movement. Korean society claims to support democracy via power of the people, yet instead of protecting these political refugees, it blocks their protests while throwing cold glances at these poor foreigners. These struggles of Myanmar people present sincere inquiries, whether the democracy heralding society of ours really embodies the basic elements of democracy after all, such as human rights, cultural diversification and leniency toward foreign nationals.
